OP
Reflecting on my own oral presentation that took place on tuesday, I will only rate my overall presentation fair not good because i feel that i could improve further and be better.
For the preparation of the presentation, my group deliberated on how we should go about presenting our proposal that was different from the proposal. We brainstorm for quite a bit and decide on the flow of the presentation. We were in-charge of different sections of presentation and I was tasked with the introduction, sharing some background information as well as introducing the framework for our proposal (EEA framework).
I started by doing some background research began planning my presentation. I wrote out a speech text for the presentation and practice a few times. But having pondered after the presentation ended, I thought I should have put in more time in preparation and practice. This would have help be calmer, less nervous and more confident and this may have prevented me from forgetting to present some points. I felt that more practice focus on presenting a good presentation such as being more enthusiastic and having more confidence to engage the audience well. It will also help look at my cards and the slides less frequently. I think my voice was loud and audible and i adopted good standing posture without too many hand gestures. For the Q & A session, i think all of us in the group handled the session pretty well.
As I read the oral presentation rubic from my peers after class, I realized that the flow of slides for the pictures was flashed too slowly and too many pictures were used. It then gave rise to an awkward silence when it was flashed because I intended to speak only after all the picture slides were flashed. I felt that the use of slideware and delivery was poor. I did not achieve in relaying the message that I initially wanted to bring across. Next time when such situation is faced again, I would take another approach or try to flash the slides faster and provide commentary or pose questions to the audience as the slides flashed.
Hello Andrew,
The overall feel of your presentation was alright, so a pat on your back for that! You did not sound overly nervous too. You did make connection with your slides by referring to your slides occasionally.
But like you have mentioned, the screening time for the pictures was too long. You could have given some ‘live commentary’ instead, so that we do not feel lost too.
I certainly can’t agree more on how important practice is. Practising more and being much more familiar with our speech and slides will definitely aid in allowing us to be more confident thus delivering a more professional presentation!
I feel that you could have been slightly louder and show more enthusiasm (perhaps through the variation of tone) though.
Hey Andrew,
Nice presentation! I feel that your group did really well and I meant it. Your slides leave me pretty deep impression I would say with the number of pictures you posted. However, I do agree I agree with joanne that you can give some comments or simply hasten the slides so that there will be less of the awkward silent.
And yes, certainly that more practice will help you improve and less nervous ( actually I think you sounded alright and was pretty calm ). Just one point to note, maybe you can refer less to your cue card , because at certain part of the presentation, it seems like you are reading out what you have written there.
cheers,
yongshen
hey Joanne and yongshen.
Thanks for the encouraging comments! Definitely practising will help us more, couldn’t agree with you more. I will be practising even more for any future “op” for sure.
Points noted about the picture slides. I will take note and see how I can improve on that further to effectively bring across the intended message!
thanks again!
If I recall correctly, you were standing pretty far away most of the time, almost next to the screen. I think standing closer would be better. If I am mistaken and you were standing somewhere in the middle, then please disregard this.
Your self-assessment is pretty close to what I think as well, apart from the nervousness, which I did not notice. So at least that didn’t show (to my untrained eye). I also liked the overall style of the slides and your group’s pictorial representation of points/features rather than the traditional bullet points.
Hi Andrew,
I think your presentation delivery was pretty well done. My main gripe was about the presentation itself, which you had already mentioned. Also, I felt that your group was setting up the problem regarding environmental issues rather than tackling the problem of insufficient module coverage. I think that your problem statement should rather be focused on why the current GEMs are not sufficient for giving a wholistic education about environmental issues rather than spending half your time trying to prove that there are environmental issues to be tackled in the first place.
As with Alvin, I didn’t notice any nervousness so I think you hid it pretty well. Perhaps varying your voice tone would help, since your volume is loud already. I must admit that I zoned out abit towards the end of your presentation leading to Alan’s as the content seemed rather dry (EEA framework and all).
But still, I like your creativity (although yes the pictures could use speeding up), also the slide layout was pretty well done. So good job!
Regards,
Aaron
Dear Andrew,
You were as calm as your usual self, sounded confident throughout the whole presentation. It would be great if you can show more emotions at the start because it’s certainly very sad to see the present condition of the Earth. In this way, you can engaged the audience more by having them to feel empathic with this current issue. You might want to utilize your low pitch to your advantage by sounding upset for greater impact.
You stood rooted on the ground, occasionally turning around to look at the slides. Perhaps you can consider standing nearer to your audience when conveying your message that concerns all of us. You maintained eye contact with the audience throughout your presentation which is done very well. It could be better if you can use your eyes to connect with your audience, making them feel that you were communicating to them one on one.
I like the way you captivate your audiences’ attention by satisfying their visual appetite through the stunning images in your slides. I agree with you that the flow of slides should be faster. Lastly, if you can have more hand gestures and variation in your tone, it will make your presentation even better.
p/s: Your English is good, probably you might want to try presenting without a script as it hinders you to make hand gestures. =)
Cheers,
Jason
Hi alvin, aaron and jason,
Thanks for your comments, really appreciate it. I will take note of the points you guys emphasized and will look into it. I will use these comments to help me improve on my presentation skills and I’m sure it will do me good for future presentation as well.
Thanks again.
